Internationally people use the term ‘ice hockey’ to distinguish the sport from field hockey but here in Canada we just say ‘hockey’ and everyone knows what we mean (I’m assuming it’s similar in the US).

The NHL is the premier professional league in the world, but there are many more. The KHL in Russia is growing and the Swedish elite league is a strong league. There are other professional and semi-professional leagues in North America.
